I LOVE having fresh veggies, but since we move often (Military), and usually don't have much of a back yard, I wanted to find a way to have a mini garden. This takes up very little space, can be moved, and gives us fresh veggies. I plant carrots, lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers....
What you need:
A large, DEEP (36+ inches) container (I actually used a HUGE plastic bin that I bought from Target, in their storage section)
A lot of potting soil
A drill
A few medium rocks (I actually used some I found at the $ Store in the craft area)
Vegetable seeds
Clean your bin with hot water. Do not use soap. When your bin is clean, take your drill and drill 8-10 evenly spaced holes in the bottom of your bin. These will allow for drainage. Turn your bin right side up. Bring it outside along with the rest of the supplies. Line the bottom of your bin with rocks. Fill the bin with top soil. Leave around two inches at the top. Plant your seeds. Water lightly. Now move the bin to an area that allows for some sunlight. Allow several weeks for your veggies to start to sprout.
Options:
-You can make a little skirt for your bin with elastic, and fabric.
-You can make multiples of these to spread out your garden.
-Make a mini one of these for an herb garden.
